Signature Ideas

Differentiating concepts that define what this repository is uniquely positioned to do.

SI-001: Hypertext as a Living Medium

Premise: Hypertext is not a historical curiosity. It is a mode of expression, a way of structuring thought, and a counterweight to the algorithmic flattening of the web. This archive exists to demonstrate that hypertext research produces insights that matter now.

Implication: Every content piece should answer: "Why does this matter in 2026?"

SI-002: The Archive as Knowledge Graph

Premise: A collection of papers is not an archive. An archive is a connected structure where papers reference each other, themes emerge, and visitors can follow trails of thought.

Implication: Every new paper should be connected to existing papers. Theme pages and cross-reference links are not luxuries — they define the archive.

SI-003: P2P Preservation as Political Act

Premise: Mirroring academic literature on a decentralized, content-addressed network is a statement about who should control access to knowledge.

Implication: The archive's existence is itself a research contribution. Document the philosophy.

SI-004: Bridges Between Communities

Premise: ACM Hypertext sits at the intersection of hypertext systems, social media analysis, digital humanities, web science, and HCI. The archive can reveal connections that individual papers cannot.

Implication: Prioritize synthesis across subfields. A post connecting the Triptych paper with the echo chamber paper is more valuable than two separate summaries.

SI-005: The Small-Web Toolkit

Premise: Several papers in the archive point toward a "small web" philosophy — personal websites, hypertext fiction, niche tools, deliberate linking. This archive embodies that philosophy.

Implication: Frame the archive not just as a record of research but as a source of actionable patterns for builders.
