Following the conversation of offering the same experience on your Desktop Node as in a Server Node:
Agree! That's why I think both web experiences are valuable. NYT would serve enough of web experience for their user base to work. And this experience will inevitably be limited, because making it more powerful demands more trust from the user and users might be visiting many different sites.
So, real power users would want their desktop app, or probably a web app with their own server. Less power users that don't have an app but want a unified decent experience would want a web app, doing everything from there in a unified fashion like they would do in desktop app. And careless (or less onboarded users) would be fine with a "scattered" or "federated" or "sandboxed" web experience that is scoped to each individual site.
At least this is how I see it currently.
And the conversation about having a Newsrc Resource that you upload to a Node and tracks your Subscriptions and Read/Unreads.
We agree if I have the same Newsrc file in my computer and on Gabo.es digital ocean server, the information in both nodes should be exactly the same?
What if we give the Site owner and Server a Library page:
